Summer is almost here, which means increased outdoor activities and in turn, a spike in heat-related illnesses. Here at Davis Corner, we want to ensure that you are prepared for the warm weather and the health risk it brings along with it.
It is imperative that you are familiar with these heat-related illnesses and their symptoms so that you may notice if you, or another individual, is experiencing one of the following and seek proper medical care.
To help prevent the onset of a heat-related illness:
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte replenishing fluids.
Do not overexert yourself for long periods of time.
Take frequent rest in shaded areas or inside air conditioned spaces throughout the day.
Wear light, loose clothing and hats to assist your body in staying cool.
Apply sunscreen when your skin is exposed to the sun and do this multiple times if you intend to experience prolonged sun exposure.
In addition to understanding heat-related illnesses and being cautious to prevent them, you must also be aware that there are still other factors that come to play when extreme heat presents itself. For instance, some individuals find it very difficult to tolerate heat in the first place, others are taking certain medications that impair their ability to dissipate heat or have a history of heat-related illnesses. It is of extreme importance to consult a doctor if you feel that your health history will implicate your fun in the sun.
So please, constantly monitor yourself and those around you when in extreme heat, for you can help prevent and detect a heat-related illness. Always remember to call 911 when you suspect we are needed - have a fun and safe summer!
